Our Studio

Saltgrain Studio is a research-driven design practice focused on objects, interiors, and the passage of time. The studio approaches design through close observation—studying how materials age, how objects are used, and how spaces hold memory.

Rather than working within fixed categories, Saltgrain Studio operates between disciplines. Objects are treated as both functional and cultural artifacts, read through their construction, finishes, wear, and repair. This process values continuity over novelty and attention over immediacy.

The studio currently functions as a platform for object-based research, visual essays, and design commentary. Through writing, imagery, and archival study, Saltgrain Studio aims to slow the conversation around objects and interiors—making space for thoughtful engagement rather than quick consumption.

Our Philosophy

Saltgrain Studio works from the belief that design unfolds over time. Objects and spaces are not static outcomes, but ongoing relationships shaped by use, care, and change.

Quiet design, in this context, is not about minimalism or reduction. It is about careful intention – decisions guided by proportion, material honesty, and long-term use. Nothing is added without reason; nothing is removed simply to simplify.

The studio does not separate old from contemporary. Weathered surfaces, industrial materials, and modern forms are considered together like a composition, with an emphasis on alignment rather than contrast for its own sake. Age is appropriated not as deterioration, but as accumulated information.

Design here is composed rather than performative. The hand is present, but not emphasized. The goal is not transformation for its own sake, but spaces and objects that feel settled, durable, and considered.
